The CBS Main page has been reorganized to bring the most frequently used links to the top of the page.

About Competency-Based Education

Competency-Based education is a proven approach to teaching — and learning. It clearly spells out what students should know and be able to do from one level to the next in all subjects.

What makes our approach unique? Instead of being grouped by age, students are grouped by what they know and are able to do in some subjects such as reading and math. Students who need more challenging work move to the next level without delay, while those who need extra help get it.

Here is another way to think about it: When students play a video game, they must master one level before moving to the next level. They are highly motivated to succeed and in charge of their own progress. So in the classroom, for example, when students master level three in math, they get to move to level four.

Teachers use a “rubric” — a scoring guide — to make sure students learn what they need to know. Students use a guide of their own to track individual progress.

Students earn scores of 1, 2, 3 or 4 that correspond precisely with how well they know the material. A score of 3 is proficient, with 4 indicating advanced skill or knowledge. Students must earn a score of 3 in each level and then take a test to demonstrate proficiency before advancing to the next level.

Expectations are consistent from class to class and school to school. Teachers, families and students know what knowledge has been mastered and what still needs to be learned.

Resources to support the Colorado Academic Standards and Common Core implementation.

  • NSDL - National Science Digital Library NSDL is the nation's online portal for education and research on learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
  • Interactivate Interactive is a set of free, online course ware for exploration in science and mathematics. It is comprised of activities, lessons, and discussions.
  • Marzano Proficiency Scale Banks This tool provides scoring guides and sample tasks for the Common Core.
  • North Carolina Department of Public Instruction - Instructional Support Tools North Carolina has unpacked the Common Core State Standards. This resource serves as good source of example problems related to each individual standard. Select the appropriate content area to open a document like the following 4th Grade Math example.   • Arizona Department of Education - Math -- Literacy - Provides breakdown of the Common Core State Standards with sample Mathematical Practices and Explanations & Examples.
  • Idaho Total Instruction Alignment - Provides breakdown of the Common Core State Standards with sample ELL, Task Analysis, Vocabulary, Sample Assessment Item, and Materials & Resources.
  • IXL alignment to Colorado math standards (Common Core Standards) With IXL's state standards alignments, you can easily find unlimited practice problems specifically tailored to each required standard. Submitted by Jeff Raposa
  • Connexions - Sharing Knowledge and Building Communities Connexions is a place to view and share educational material made of small knowledge chunks called modules that can be organized as courses, books, reports, etc. Anyone may view or contribute:
    • authors create and collaborate
    • instructors rapidly build and share custom collections
    • learners find and explore content
  • Khan Academy The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone. The Khan Academy's materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.
  • Beacon Learning Center The Beacon Learning Center houses a variety of Lesson Plans and Unit Plans. Beacon Learning Center is an online educational resource and professional development center currently funded through a Technology Innovation Challenge Grant from the U. S. Department of Education (2000-2005). The resources posted in the Beacon database are products of professional development activities teaching a standards-based planning model. While aligned to the 1996 version of Florida's Sunshine State Standards, they remain educationally sound resources for teachers.
  • PhET Simulations Fun, interactive, research-based simulations of physical phenomena from the PhET project at the University of Colorado.
  • Thinkfinity thinfinity.org is a web site that brings teachers the best online educational resources for free. Through partnerships with 11 of the most trusted names in education, our site offers premier materials that enhance teacher effectiveness and improve student achievement.
  • Curricki Curriki is more than your average website; we're a community of educators, learners and committed education experts who are working together to create quality materials that will benefit teachers and students around the world. Curriki is an online environment created to support the development and free distribution of world-class educational materials to anyone who needs them.
  • UDL Guidelines: National Center on Universal Design for Learning The UDL Guidelines are organized according to the three main principles of UDL that address representation, expression, and engagement. For each of these areas, specific "Checkpoints" for options are highlighted, followed by examples of practical suggestions. Like UDL itself, these Guidelines are flexible and should be mixed and matched into the curriculum as appropriate. The UDL Guidelines are not meant to be a "prescription" but a set of strategies that can be employed to overcome the barriers inherent in most existing curricula. They may serve as the basis for building in the options and the flexibility that are necessary to maximize learning opportunities for all students. Educators may find that they are already incorporating many of these guidelines into their practice.

Course Proposals

The following links will provide all the required documents to propose a new course or to propose changes to existing courses in out Competency-Based System. Each link will download a zipped folder, containing instructions, checklists, fill-able forms, ballot and tally sheets, and a calendar of deadlines. Please contact Kevin Byers as soon as possible if you are considering proposing or adjusting a course.
